Amtrak operates passenger trains in North Dakota. National Railroad Passenger Corporation or Amtrak is a publicly funded railroad service which started operations on May 1, 1971 to provide United States with the intercity passenger train service.

North Dakota’s only passenger rail service is Amtrak’s Empire Builder. This passenger train runs from Chicago, Illinois to Seattle, Washington and Portland, Oregon. In North Dakota the Empire Builder operates on the BNSF main line from Fargo to Grand Forks, to near Fort Buford, where it crosses into Montana. The train stoppage is at Fargo, Grand Forks, Devils Lake, Rugby, Minot, Stanley, and Williston. The trains run twice daily, with one train in each direction.
